cPanel WordPress Preview URL

Create a preview URL for WordPress on cPanel

Even if you don't have a domain configured (or it's not propagated), you can still view your WordPress website online and make changes in the admin. This is great for staging domains and test publishing websites to compare speed between hosts.

  • Edit two tables using phpMyadmin
  • Add two lines in wp-config.php
  • Find your server IP and cPanel username
  • Test and log into WordPress Admin

Which tables do I edit in phpMyadmin?

Just log into your cPanel account and click phpMyadmin and navigate to your WordPress database. Look for the table "_options" and edit option name rows "siteurl" and "home". When you click and edit, everything is automatically saved.

What do I add to my wp-config.php file?

Just above the /* That's all, stop editing! Happy blogging. */, add the below snippet:

define('WP_HOME','http://167.160.175.245/~username/'); define('WP_SITEURL','http://167.160.175.245/~username/');

How do I get my cPanel username?

Just log into your cPanel account and look in the top right corner. You could also check your email history in control panel and look for "Getting started" email.

Once logged into cPanel, look for sidebar link "Server Information", it's also included in your hosting welcome email.

You shouldn't have to edit .htaccess file, but if for some odd reason, things don't work, just add the below snippet:

# BEGIN WordPress <IfModule mod_rewrite.c><br/> RewriteEngine On<br/> RewriteBase /~username/<br/> RewriteRule ^index\.php$ - [L]<br/> RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f<br/> RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d<br/> RewriteRule . /~username/index.php [L] </IfModule><br/> # END WordPress
